Start with the client’s next action
A homeowner checking tomorrow’s visit needs a different experience from a customer paying an invoice or choosing bathroom finishes. Write down the three actions that matter on your jobs before searching for a portal.
Try those actions from a phone the customer would use. A portal that shows attractive photos but cannot perform a required action is not simpler for that customer; it merely moves the task somewhere else.
- Read: status, upcoming visit, photos, or care instructions.
- Decide: review and respond to a fixed scope or change.
- Transact: book, reschedule, or pay.
- Collaborate: ask questions, upload documents, or make selections.
Check the portal already attached to your software
Jobber’s Client Hub and Housecall Pro’s Customer Portal are both real alternatives. Buildertrend also provides client and subcontractor communication tools. If one already contains the job’s authoritative information, improving how you use it may be preferable to maintaining another page.
Ask what the customer can see, which actions are enabled, and how updates reach them. Do not infer authentication requirements or capabilities from a marketing screenshot; use the actual client experience.

HandySuite’s deliberately smaller scope
HandySuite workers publish from iPhone or iPad. Clients view the shared link in a browser without creating an account. An issued quote or change order can be accepted or declined after the client verifies a code sent to their saved email address.
The portal does not take payments, host client chat, or accept client uploads. An update becomes visible when published, but you share the link and send update messages through your own communication apps. If you need automatic customer messaging or bidirectional collaboration, include that in the comparison.

Simple access still needs deliberate sharing
HandySuite’s unlisted link grants viewing access to whoever has it; it is not a password-protected customer account. You can disable portal access for a project. That convenience needs to match the information you plan to publish.
For a custom Notion page, inspect sharing settings and child pages before sending a link. For any product, test access as the intended recipient and keep internal notes separate from customer-facing information.

A practical portal trial
Create a fictional repair with a next visit, one scope change, three photos, and a completion document. Ask someone unfamiliar with the app to find the next visit and explain what work is agreed.
Then test your required customer actions and close the project. Check what remains available afterward. Use those observations to decide; we have not timed these products or run a comparative usability study.

Common questions
Is a client portal the same as field-service software?
No. A portal is the customer-facing experience. Some portals belong to broader scheduling and billing systems; others mainly publish project information.
Do HandySuite clients need an account?
No account is needed to view a shared portal. Accepting or declining an issued quote or change order requires a verification code sent to the client’s saved email address.
