Job photos / A practical comparison

Contractor photo documentation apps: CompanyCam, Buildertrend or a client link?

Capturing a reliable job record and showing a homeowner selected progress photos are related but different tasks. CompanyCam, Buildertrend, and HandySuite serve different scopes; choose around how your team captures, retrieves, and shares the record.

Separate the internal record from the client view

A crew may need many photographs: existing damage, hidden services, measurements, material labels, and completed work. The homeowner may need only a few pictures with an explanation. Test both requirements rather than assuming that a shareable gallery is the entire documentation process.

A consistent capture routine matters in any app. Agree on which photos are required at arrival, before covering work, and at completion. Software cannot recover a photograph nobody took.

When CompanyCam deserves the first trial

CompanyCam’s product documentation centers on jobsite photos and creating records such as photo reports. Its current plan guide includes an option for solo operators and small teams, so it should not be dismissed as a large-crew-only product.

Test whether the intended plan helps you find the right image, turn it into a useful record, and share the selected result. If documentation is the main operational problem, start with a documentation-focused product rather than a general portal.

When photos are part of a larger project

Buildertrend combines file storage with construction communication, including client and subcontractor portals. That broader context may matter when photos support homeowner selections or coordination among several people.

Evaluate a full project sequence: upload a progress image, explain a decision, locate the relevant document, and find it again at handover. If your work consists of short repairs, run the same sequence and judge whether the broader workflow earns its place.

When publishing selected updates is enough

HandySuite can show worker-published photos, files, status, and visits on a client link. It does not let clients upload their own photos or hold a conversation in the portal. Those limits can rule it out if homeowner uploads or in-app discussion are essential.

It is also not a claim of forensic evidence preservation or a substitute for a specialized documentation process. If your work needs particular retention, audit, or export behavior, verify those requirements directly with the product you are considering.

What to test before adopting a photo workflow

Use a small fictional job and then deliberately try to find a specific image without remembering its filename. Share only part of the record and inspect it from the recipient’s device.

Compare how each product handles the questions below. We have not independently benchmarked upload speed, offline reliability, or long-term retention.

  • Can the right people find and explain an image?
  • Can internal material stay out of the client view?
  • What happens with poor connectivity on your actual devices?
  • Can you export the record and retain access after a subscription change?

Common questions

Is a client portal the same as photo documentation software?

No. A portal can publish selected images while a documentation system may serve a broader capture, organization, retrieval, and reporting workflow. Test both needs.

Can clients upload photos to HandySuite?

No. Its client portal shows published content but does not accept client uploads. Keep a separate intake channel if you need customer photos.
